Each time a prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded that year
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often small games, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
