RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
